My friend and colleague Jon Sykes recently launched his latest side-project usernamecheck.com. It’s a service for checking a slew of social networks to see if the username you regularly use is taken or not. Actually, you may have heard of it since it’s been getting a ton of press lately. It’s been mentioned by swissmiss, Lifehacker and CNET. Turns out a lot of people like keeping tabs on their brand and identity when it comes to social networks. Companies like Coca-Cola could appreciate something like this.
Mr. Sykes has recruited me to help out with the UI and design of the site. So look for updates to usernamecheck.com in the coming weeks (or days).

It doesn’t work, in Firefox it just sits there and in IE it gives an error on page icon in the lower left status bar.
Needs to have a timeout for each site it checks. It has been checking “behance” for more than five minutes now. Needs to try for maybe a max of 1 minute and go to the next one. Also, would be nice to have checkboxes beside of site names we don’t want to check.
Great concept, but it just isn’t there yet for general public use. Runs VERY slow, just getting the webpage pulled up, let alone the actual checking time, but that could be the site you are checking, not your program.
Keep on working with it!
It should be functioning a lot better now, we fixed all the issues with FF, and IE and we added better error handling, oh and shifted hosts (unfortunately that’s costing an arm and a leg, so we now have Adsense to try and offset some of those costs.
