Manifest : A Wordpress Theme

I’m proud to announce my first publicly available Wordpress theme, Manifest. Manifest is based on a previous design of my personal site. It’s a theme I rather liked and didn’t want to see go to waste. So instead of letting it die off in a folder on my hard drive, I decided to clean it off, polish it up and release it into the wild.

My goal with Manifest was to create a clean and streamlined theme that focused on the content and not the distractions. It utilizes a single column, 500 pixel wide layout. No sidebars. No widgets.

Manifest

Some highlights:

  • Valid XHTML Markup. It currently validates as XHTML Transitional. That is until you start embedding all those crazy YouTube videos and Google Ads ;)
  • Microformat support. The posts are marked up using the hAtom microformat. Which an increasing number of search engines (like Yahoo!) are beginning to support and index.
  • 404 page. I’ve included the standard Wordpress 404 template, which in addition to a nice “not found” message, it provides your readers with a list of recent articles.
  • Archives template. An archives template that supports categories, tags and monthly views.
  • Links template. A basic links page template. This isn’t a standard Wordpress template so you’ll need to add it as a new page. But it will pull in any links you add to the Links section in the admin.
  • Google ad (sorta) support. There a designated spot on the single post pages for Google or any other type of text ads. Commented out by default, but there if you want it.
  • IE6 unsupported. This is a feature, not a bug. If a user attempts to view your site in IE6, they’ll be presented with an unstyled (but perfectly functional) site. Along with a friendly message suggesting they upgrade their browser.
  • Some webkit visual candy. It’s minor but hovering over the buttons will provide smooth rollover transitions in Safari 4 and Google Chrome thanks to their new CSS based transition properties.

Feel free to use as you please, I just ask that you keep the Manifest link at the bottom. Thanks and enjoy.

I’m really happy you released this theme - it was a great design and I’m also glad it can live on. Great idea not supporting IE6 and having microformats in the template.

WOW! Very nice!

Just one question - would this theme work on WPMU?

hResume - is the microformat that would be nice to support as well (like LikedIN).

posted by Ivan | Irish Blogger on 03.20.09 at 5:51 am

What I meant with hResume was: as LikedIN does.

posted by Ivan | Irish Blogger on 03.20.09 at 5:52 am

I don’t know if it’ll work with WPMU because I don’t use MU. But from what I’ve read about it I don’t see why it shouldn’t. If you try it and it does, let me know.

How to create Archives?

posted by wespread on 03.26.09 at 6:50 am

@wespread

Ah, I apologize for that. I apparently neglected to put the template declaration at the top of the archives.php.

I’ve uploaded a new version with the fix, so you can either download that or just add the template declaration to archives.php in your existing file.

Nice theme. And I like the IE6 message, but when I view my blog using IE6 it doesn’t display the message very well. I get a much smaller, compressed red bar across the top of the page with no writing. Any ideas on how I can fix it?

posted by Gary on 03.31.09 at 12:52 am

Hi, Just found this link to you via @iandstewart on Twitter. Does your theme work as a stand alone WP Theme or can it be used in conjunction with Thematic?

I new to all of this, but you theme is almost exactly what I’ve been after for my charity blog, but are there any issue with either WP2.7 or other general browsers?

Cheers.

posted by Damian on 03.31.09 at 6:55 am

@Gary - You have some other stylesheets being loaded due to other plugins you have installed. These are probably causing the issue so you should start your debug process there.

@Damian - This theme is not designed for Thematic. As stated above, IE6 is unsupported. Current standards based browsers shouldn’t have an issue.

posted by Jim Barraud on 03.31.09 at 9:12 am

Jim, Thanks. I’m not using IE6, so no probs. but do I need to uninstall thematic and let manifest operate on its own as a theme? Does it need a seperate template or is WP blog template I’ve upload its parent?

I’m a novice at this so sorry if these are basic questions.

posted by Damian on 03.31.09 at 9:59 am

@Damian - Sorr,y but I have no experience with thematic so I don’t know what it entails. The easiest thing to do would be to install the Manifest theme manually, by placing it in the themes folder, and see if it shows up in the Wordpress themes selection.

Hope that helps.

Great work, I like this minimalic approach. Easy to read as well. However, I am editing a lot in past posts and don’t know where to put the “edit code”. Should be in single posts, but I cannot find out where and how. You have a special handwriting, so to speak. When browsing posts there is no “edit this” to be seen, except for the comments, not for the posts. It’s the only minor thing, plus the fact that there are still many people using IE6, lot of people who work on offices and are not allowed to download a different browser.

I was going to go with thesis, but I quickly changed my mind after seeing this theme. Best minimal theme I’ve seen in a while.

posted by Nate Kay on 04.03.09 at 12:55 am

Is it possible to turn off the IE6 message so that people using this browser still can experience your beautiful theme? At least 25 percent of my visitors use IE6, most likely because their boss don’t want them tp use something different.

Beautiful theme, it makes you concentrate on the content, not on a flashy layout :-)

I still have a problem thoigh: when I open the blog with Chrome or Opera, my antivirus (Avira 9) says I have a trojan in my Firefox (!) plugins folder. (prove here).

Can this be related to the “IE6 unsupported” feature? I get this message only when I’m using this theme on the blog.

posted by claus on 04.04.09 at 10:40 am

Sorry, the link doesn’t work. The “proof” is here.

posted by claus on 04.04.09 at 10:41 am

@claus The IE6 support is controlled through the CSS and would not be the cause of your virus issue.

posted by Daus on 05.12.09 at 6:34 am

@Daus

This is due to a referenced include that doesn’t exist. This inadvertently made it in when I initially released the theme, but I quickly updated the download with the fix.

You can get the fix by redownloading the zip and just overwriting the search.php file.

Love the look of this theme. But I want to ask two things that seem to be ‘missing,’ although they might have been left out on purpose…

First, when using blockquotes in the comments section, there is no way to differentiate between the quote and normal text. They look the same.

And second, will threaded comments be enabled? In my own tests they do not show up, and I have enabled then through the admin.

And since I have you here, images are not centered by default, it seems, but that is not a big deal at all. We can just center them if we want them centered. I have not tried that, but I am guessing it will work as it should.

This theme is wonderful, and provides a real focus on content that seems to be missing from other minimalist themes. Great work!

Instead, I’m shown the standard 404 page provided by my ISP, which has never been the case with previous templates. Great theme Jim! I love the simplicity! Thank you SO much!

For those of you who have asked how to get an image/logo in the main header area, with the help of my tech-savvy hubby I managed to achieve this and would like to share -

From your admin panel, go to Appearance>Editor. On the right hand side select the header.php file. Scroll down looking for this code:

<

div id=”siteWrapper”>

h1 class=”vcard author”><a href="/” title=”Home” class=”fn”>

Modify it to the following:

<

div id=”siteWrapper”>

&lt;a href=&quot;/" title="Home" class="fn"&gt;

</a>

Of course you will put the name of your image/logo in the “nameofimage.jpg” section. And also you will need to upload the image file to the server in that specified location.

Save this.

Next, you go to your stylesheet.css. Under the part that says /* Headers */ insert this code:

div#headerimg
{
}

Save and you should have a logo up.

Sorry for the excruciating detail for you developers, however, as a newb, I know how lost and frustrated I can get trying to figure this stuff out.

posted by Haley on 09.11.09 at 3:12 pm

OK. Corrections since the code section was modified when I submitted my comment above- a total newb mistake I’m sure :-)

Replace all “!“‘s with “<”. First bit of code look like this:

!div id=”siteWrapper”>

!h1 class=”vcard author”>!a href=”!?php echo get_option(‘home’); ?>/” title=”Home” class=”fn”>!?php bloginfo(‘name’);?>!/a>!/h1>

Modify to:
!div id=”siteWrapper”>
!div id=”headerimg”>
!a href=”/” title=”Home” class=”fn”>
!img src=”wp-content/themes/manifest/images/logo.png”/>
!/a>
!/div>

The headers part showed up correctly.

This theme is great. But it doesnot support sub pages. I think subpages implementation should be made like Satorri.

Is it possible to make the theme wider, to say around 600px, while keep the text limited to being centered and 500px in width

Also would it be possible for photos to be wider than the 500px width after this change?

Beautiful theme.

Hi, Jim -
I’m a web designer and I would like to use the Manifest template on a client’s site, However we’d like to remove your link at the bottom. Under what conditions would you grant permission to do this?
Thank you,
Chris

Also, I’m using h4 for my content since the regular content is so small.

I can’t seem to make the command operate. I can spell CSS but I can’t actually understand it so if you’d be so kind as to ignore my hideous noob inabilities, it would be awesome.

The theme manifest looks interesting. However I find it is not in the WP repository and cannot be downloaded from the Add Theme option of WP admin.

Hi Jim,
Amazing work on the theme, I only recently switched to wp from my self built, dull old html site and Manifest is the first theme that I used, and one that I will stick with, I love it!

I was recently trying to figure out how to get an Archive page going so tried to add a new page and found that it wouldn’t appear on the blog. I’ve also tried editing the name of some of my other pages and still nothing happens. Could this be an error with the latest version of wp?

Once again many thanks for a great theme!

Hey, I downloaded this theme and love it!

But I have a problem with it.

The text isn’t smooth, it’s very pixelated and hard to read.

What is the problem?

Hey Jim,

i am not so into progamming Html and Css. Is there any way to include a sidebar into your theme as would love to use but the sidebar for me is mandatory.

I know you excluded this feature in your great theme on purpose but maybe there is a way to make it possible for some if necessary.

Thanks & regards from Hamburg / Germany

Like it. Trying it out.

One question though …

Do you not have any css for the ‘more-link’?

Visually it shows differently from, say, the ‘edit think’ link, i.e. with a space below the text.

Just a thought.

Hi, I created a header in Illustrator that I would like to upload. But when I go in to header.php in edit themes…I have NO idea what I’m looking at.

What do I need to do with all of this to make it display my own Illustrator logo:

<

div id=”siteWrapper”>

<a href="/” title=”Home” class=”fn”>

<ul>

</ul>

Thanks!!!

Been using the theme since last month and I’m loving it. But suddenly I encountered a problem that the earlier posts doesn’t lead to its specific post but to the recent post I created.

Did I do something wrong along the way or the recent Wordpress update somehow messed it up?

Any advise?

I have used this theme on http://www.cyanidevogue.com and changed a lot of things on it. Some of you are asking what to do to change the title of the theme to a header image.

I edited header.php and this is how I did it.

So replace the code below:

<

div id=”siteWrapper”>

<a href="/” title=”Home” class=”fn”>

<

div id=”mainNav”>

With this:

<

div id=”siteWrapper”>

<a href="/” title=”Home” class=”fn”>

<

div id=”mainNav”>

Hopefully that will come through in my comment.

Also I am looking to make the theme slightly larger myselx (600px) and I can’t seem to find it either. I might have been working on this too long to actually find it. Anyway thank you for making this theme, it’s really easy to work with so far. Well one of the easiest that I have run into in the WordPress world.

I know this is a popular question and I apologize for not addressing it sooner. I plan an adding an FAQ once the next Manifest update is complete, but in the meantime…

To replace the header text with a header image all that needs to be edited is the CSS file. You’re image should be 500px in width and you’ll need to make note of the height of the image. You’ll want to place your header image in the images folder of the manifest theme. Next you’ll want to open style.css from within the manifest theme and replace the following code on line 101…

h1 a{
padding-right: 60px;
margin-left: 60px;
}

with this code…

h1 a{
display: block;
width: 500px;
height: /* your image height here */ ;
text-indent: -9999px;
background: url(images/YourFileNameHere.png) no-repeat left top;
}

You’ll need to add in the height of your image as well as the file name. And that should be it.

I hope this helps.

How do you change the background image/color for this theme? I can’t seem to find the line in the Stylesheet? I have an image (url) that I would like to have as the background image instead of white or transparent, but I love the simple architecture of the theme.

Jim,

Thanks for the great theme. I’ve used it for my site, though I’ve tweaked it a bit (e.g., widened the body, changed some of the fonts, and some other things).

I do have a question:

On the WP dashboard, I’ve chosen to show only one article on the front page. This seems to have affected the archives page as well. I’m looking through the code to find where to change that, but if you know why this is, it’d be a big help.

Thanks again for the beautiful, classy theme!

posted by J.C. Samuelson on 01.30.10 at 8:37 pm

Alicia,

Yes, you can widen the center. In my experience tweaking the theme it’s merely a matter of changing the wrapper width and the main content area at a minimum. You can find both in the style.css file (search on “500px” - the default width). The header and footer widths are also in there if you want consistency.
