It’s been two months since I released my first Wordpress theme, Manifest. And in those two months the response has far exceeded my expectations. Since it’s release, Manifest has been listed on various Wordpress theme blogs and used on countless personal blogs. It’s also enjoyed over 1100 downloads. Which still boggles my mind.
I’d like to say Thank You to everyone who’s commented, downloaded and enjoyed Manifest. I really do appreciate the support.
That being said, I’m considering making some updates to Manifest based on how I’ve seen it being used in the wild. While I have my own list, I’d like to hear from you as to what you would like to see (if anything) in an updated version.

Dunno much about going under the hood, but is there a way to tweak the title width? Right now, more than two words and I’m bumped to the next line. I’m trying to fit “The Castoff Review” in the headline. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
P.S. Smashing theme. A godsend.

I really love this theme. It’s so chaste and elegant. But I would really love to be able to insert a simple tasteful header image — an old print — just under the bog title and description. I’ve been trying to figure out how from what a couple of other people have done, but am a bit of a doofus and a chicken about these things. So that’s what I’d love.

I would really like to see a feed template included along with the archive and links templates. In my humble opinion, that is the only thing really missing in this template. I love it.

Thanks for the theme! I really love it!

@Bill
To show the authors name of a post, you’ll need to uncomment the author line in the index.php file. Hope that helps.

HI, Thank you for your excellent theme. It’s the right thing I was looking for.
But
1- I wish it’s comment area would be smaller. like this one. because the theme is small but the comment form is big.
2- I don’t know if this is a theme feature or not, but I like my comments appear in a pop up window, I don’t know, is it possible to make the theme to open the comment form in a pop up window? or it must be a pluggin? ( I didn’t find any plugin)
3- If you add side bar support, the blogger has a wider choice with your theme. for example I could put my other weblog RSS in the side bar and nothing more.
4- I made your theme RTL for my language Persian. It’s better to publish a RTL version of your theme, and you will see how the downloads rise.

I now simplicity is the goal and i really appreciate your theme (one of the best wordpress themes around (and i’ve seen about every one out there))!
Now that we settled that, here are the few things new version could have:
1. Categories (cause even with simplicity some people just need them and they can probably be added subtly)
2. The end
3. :)

I really love your theme, its simplicity. I made some small modification to fit my needs. I thought about suggesting threaded comments, but I think this wouldn’t go with the themes character. But I think some unobtrusive way to highlight the author comments would be nice.
Furthermore I’d like to report that if I’m logged in and want to comment a post, the comment form shows the same blank fields as it does for a not logged in user. So if I type in any hilarious name, email and website combination, the comment shows up under my user name.
So it would be nice to hide the comment author fields if a user is logged in.
Nevertheless, great great job on this theme.

Oh, and I just discoverd, that the Logout Link in the comments.php is not working. But I found a solution here.
I think it’s a good idea to migrate the theme completely to 2.8, since there are some pre-2.7 things in there.

one thing i’m having trouble with is the search. i tag everything, but it still doesn’t show a full list when i search tag words.

I ditto the comment about the feed. It needs RSS feed capabilities. Best is a template with options and a nice link at the top like the Archives and Links templates.

I’ve been using Manifest over at Remember The User since it’s launch. I love it.
I’ll probably tweak it a bit when I get around to it. I’d like it to be a little wider, and it’s be great to have widget functionality in the footer (for affiliate links, related posts, etc).
But don’t take away from the minimalist design - it’s beautiful.
Thanks again for this great theme.

Great Template. I am very new to wordpress and looking to simplify my website and get back to basics. This seems to be exactly what I am looking for.
One question about sub-pages. When I select my page and would like to make it a child page of the About page, it doesn’t show up anywhere. It works in the other themes. Is there something I am doing wrong, or doesn’t this theme not support it?
Thanks for the great template!

I’m using it well at the other side like I mentioned. I’ve managed to put a logo.png
All you have to do is place the logo.png in the images folder in the theme and edit the header.php
Change the h1 tags to:
<img src="/images/logo.png” />
and you’re good to go!
Once again, thanks for the theme! I TOTALLY LOVE IT!

I love this theme, but for some reason the nav bar isn’t working when I go into another page (for example, the About page).
From the home page, I select ‘About’ in the nav bar and get taken there, but then I can’t select any other nav bar option - they are all greyed out.
Any ideas?

Jim, hearing that Manifest 2 is in the works just made my day. I am very bad at working with even the most simple tweaks in CSS or HTML, and the only 3 things I really want to change - make the central column wider by 100 or 200 pixels, add an image to the header, and add a “previous entries” link to the top nav bar - are beyond my feeble capabilities, which is why I rely on crafty designers like you. I would even pay to have these simple changes made.
Thank you for this design, it was what I needed for my site, and I look forward to M2: Return of the Killer Bunny Robots.

Anyone having trouble changing header and following elfy mcphee’s instructions above the code:
the images folder shouldn’t be within the theme according to his code it should be located in the root directory so add a new folder called images in the / stage of your wordpress in install instead of in the manifest theme folder (scuse the non technical lingo). also make sure both ” in the code are the straight kind - the one on the right in Elfy’s code messes up the whole thing

Hi.
I notice that a change in the font of the
<
h3 class=”entry-title”> between, say, index.php and single page view.
Basically, this seems to be due to the link. One seems to be bold, the other plain and more elegant. It changes width and sometimes runs over on longer titles.
Is there a simple way to fix this so they remain the same?
Thanks.

May I please request a more robust Archives page? I’m wary of depending on plug-ins. And with the archives page you designed, I can’t figure out how to easily truncate the listing of months. Makes my page go on and on.
Also, a way to easily add a sidebar to a select page? Though this might take away from your minimalist bent.
This is all appreciated!

Jim,
I tried this code you posted in an earlier comment for adding my logo to the top of my site, but it is not working for me?
h1 a{
display: block;
width: 500px;
height: /* your image height here */ ;
text-indent: -9999px;
background: url(images/YourFileNameHere.png) no-repeat left top;
can you show me an example of how this code would look if it was populated properly with the final height and file name info. i know this info. will be different for me than everyone else, just want to see what characters i maybe shouldn’t be removing.
hope that question makes sense?
Thanks.

This is a call out to the users of Manifest, maybe if we all contribute some funding to Jim via paypal we can get development back in gear. Go to his page here: http://jimbarraud.com/manifest/ and look for the donate button at the bottom.
I am at a total loss to modify my manifest-based website because I am not computer smart, but it is the only theme I can imagine using and desperately need help to add an image to my header and some of the other changes people have requested - sidebar, RSS, etc.
posted by Ben on 04.18.10 at 12:56 am
Ok, I donated $20, which I know is not a lot, but it’s the most I can afford currently. However, if every person currently using Manifest as their template would match my donation, that could possibly add up and encourage further development of this awesome design.
The ball’s in your court now fellow Manifest users - match me, donate more, or donate whatever you can, even 5 dollars from all users can add up.

Thank you, Jim, for this lovely theme. And also to Ben for the reminder to send in a donation to show appreciation (I just did). I used it on a blog I’ve just started… and already have someone else wanting me to set up a site for her using your theme! For my own use, I tightened up the vertical spacing a little. An option to set the column width and “custom header” image support would be nice for the next version, but really, I love it the way it is. Thanks again - JohnR
